After 20 years of work on its manufacture, scientists from the National Accelerator Laboratory team in Palo Alto, the day before yesterday, Wednesday (April 3, 2024) in the American state of California, completed building the largest digital camera in the world, which is approximately the size of a small car, and the weight of the camera reached 3. Tons.
The diameter of the largest lens in the giant digital camera is about 1.6 meters, and the camera has 189 sensors and 3.2 gigapixels. Researchers say it can take a picture of a golf ball from 24 kilometers away.
The cost of manufacturing the giant camera reached about 168 million dollars (about 155 million euros), according to the website of the German newspaper Zeit. It will be installed at an observatory in the Chilean Andes, where it will spend a decade photographing the southern sky and collecting data. It was planned by the team of scientists with a very precise mission. The director of the observatory, Željko Ivečić, said, “We will soon begin producing the greatest film in history and the most informative map of the night sky ever compiled.”
